Have you got the right insurance when working from home?…..

As working from home becomes the new norm for many, it is expected that a growing number of us will be working from converted sheds, garages and summerhouses over the next coming months.

According to a recent survey, many are also planning a dedicated office in their house, as people move away from a sofa or kitchen, however, this raises the concern that some are likely to not be covered by home insurance if something goes wrong.

Further data has shown that the word ‘garage’ has become the most popular search term on property portal Rightmove, as many buyers priorities are changing following the pandemic.

Offices within houses are also likely to become more common, with 43% of people in a survey stating they plan to use a home office over the next few months compared to 34% that are doing so now.

If you are using your home as an office, or plan to in the next few months, you need to know that standard home insurance products are designed to cover your property for domestic use and not as a business, although many will allow you to do office work from home.

However, if you are using your home as a business premises, storing stock and equipment at home, then you could invalidate your policy.
